Set in a majestic parkland setting, Rotherham Golf Club has been providing a true test to golfers of all abilities for more than 100 years.
Two Open champions, Sandy Herd and James Braid, had a hand in designing our wonderful 18-hole layout. If the course is special, which it is, the clubhouse is truly spectacular. An imposing gothic clubhouse built in 1813, it is a Grade II listed building which takes the breath away and lives long in the memory.
Tastefully refurbished to a high standard inside, it provides the perfect venue for weddings and special celebrations, as well as to those in search of refreshment after an invigorating round of golf.
The club welcomes applications from new members and has a thriving junior section, a product of which is Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters Champion.
You do not, however, need to be a professional to enjoy all that we have to offer. Visitors and golf societies are also invited to avail themselves of our famous Rotherham hospitality and play our excellent course. We look forward to welcoming you here in the very near future.
Rotherham Golf Club is situated in Thrybergh Park, approximately three miles east of Rotherham. Thrybergh – which is mentioned in the Domesday Book – was given to William de Perci, a chief aid to William the Conqueror and founder of the great Percy family, after the Conquest in 1066.
The estate passed on to the Normainvilles around 1200 and remained with them until 1316 when Sir Adam Reresby became Lord of Thrybergh. There then followed an unbroken succession of sixteen generations of Reresbys over the next 400 years.
Folklore has it that Reresbys took part in the battle of the Spanish Armada in 1588, a victory which the then Lord of the Manor is reputed to have commemorated by planting a large grove of chestnut trees on the estate – two of which are still standing and can be seen by the 18th tee.
In 1814 the then owners of Thrybergh, the Fullerton family, sold a large amount of timber from the estate in order to raise money to build a magnificent new gothic residence (now the clubhouse).
The golf club was formed in 1903 and there are few clubs in the UK that can claim such a glorious location and magnificent building for a clubhouse.
The Course – Rotherham has played host to some top professionals over the years, but we are proud to say that our 18 holes provides a fair test to golfers whatever their ability.
While it may not be as long as some courses, at 6,378 yards off the white tees playing to a par of 70 (SSS 71), it is far from a pushover, either. The yardage from the yellow tees is 5,954 while it is an exacting 5,654 yards from the red tees.
